What is the Cost of Progress?

Isaac McCaslin
Isaac McCaslin, Tower Study, oil on canvas, 32 in. x 32 in. 2015.
What is the cost of progress? Why I paint, what I paint is so that others, including myself, can look introspectively and ask why a certain image sparks a peculiar thought, memory, or feeling. The paintings are meant to encourage critical reflections on society as well as to induce self-discoveries.   A puzzle of themes and contradictions are hidden within the paintings. I like to think about where we come from, where we are, and where we are going, History, tradition, tragedy, and progress etc. Perhaps there will always be oppressors and the oppressed. Perhaps there must always be dissatisfaction or tragedy to get towards progress. Will tragedies be used for better or worse?
